Travel Grant Awarded

Anders Griffen is the recipient of our chapter travel grant for the 2007 MLA meeting in Pittsburgh (Feb. 26 - March 3). Anders received his BFA in music composition from SUNY-Purchase in 1999 and is currently enrolled in the MLIS program at UCLA. Well known to several members of our chapter, he has just started an internship with Blair Whittington at the Brand Library and Art Center, and he also works in Music Special Collections at UCLA under Peggy Alexander. He is an accomplished and widely experienced musician who has played drums in hundreds of jazz concerts, including seven European tours and broadcasts on the BBC. By the time of the MLA meeting in Pittsburgh next winter, he will be completing his MLIS coursework and focusing on his thesis, which will deal with music as intellectual property.

Congratulations Anders! Please welcome him to MLA when you see him in Pittsburgh.

Antonio Calvo, 1962-2006

We sadly report that our friend and colleague Antonio Calvo passed away on Monday June 12, 2006 at his home in San Fernando, California. Antonio was the Music & Media Librarian at California State University, Northridge; prior to that position he was the Music & Humanities Librarian at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California. He was MLA/SCC Member at Large for Membership from 2003-2005. Tony served on the MLA Statistics Subcommittee, and played saxophone in the MLA Big Band. Tony married his girlfriend, Lulu, in April of this year. He had just been elected MLA/SCC Chair-Elect and would have begun his term on July 1, 2006.

We are collecting donations as a chapter in his memory. At the Calvo family's request the donations will go to Janus of Santa Cruz (http://www.janussc.org/). The deadline will be July 30, 2006. Secretary/Treasurer Laura Horwitz will collect and send a check from the chapter to Janus:
